The Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women’s Voices): Securing our Rights, Securing our Future Report is an extensive whole-of-life report that reflects the incredible strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls, and their unyielding determination and vital contributions to all aspects of life.

The Report is broken into five parts, each containing a number of chapters.

Part One

Part One (chapters 1-4) provides the background, methodology and human rights framework of the Report as well as a statistical profile of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls—who they are, where they live, and statistics about their families and communities. The lived experience of these statistics are discussed in detail throughout the other parts of the Report.

Part One also includes the major themes that emerged from the stories of women and girls taken together. These include: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls have diverse strengths that support all aspects of live and the wellbeing of communities; structural forces constantly undermine and constrain the strengths of women and girls, making them vulnerable to harm and entrenching intergenerational trauma, inequality and intersectional discrimination; and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls must inform the design of policy and programs to respond to their needs. In response to these major findings, Part One sets out the ‘Way forward’—a comprehensive plan for structural reform including seven overarching recommendations and four pathways forward corresponding to the parts below.

Parts 2-5 are informed by the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls across all aspects of life from education to child protection, health, community safety, land and country, employment and housing.
